Pre-State Breakdown

Hello friends! The HSM Eagle Update has had a bit of a break since the last posting so let me catch you up on everything that has happened with the team! The Eagles are good... like really good... We have had 4 meets in the time off and the both Eagle teams have shown out in big ways! The Menard Open saw the Girls team finish in first place and the Boys team finish in second,  Catholic High was a sloppy mess but the Eagles fought hard and found a renewed strength to drive them through the rest of the year, and the Eagles once again won the district title for Boys and Girls with dominating performances by every runner! We saw highs and lows, but throughout this past month the Eagles have moved closer and closer to that ultimate goal at the end of the season!

This weekend we find ourselves a mere 8 days away from the State Championship race, and the team traveled to Midland to have a dual meet with the Midland squad. Fall is in full swing now and with the weather finally giving us a break and cooling off the team was primed for some really awesome times! Although I fully expected some breakthroughs, based on what we have seen in the last few races from the team, what the Eagles were able to accomplish was incredible and gives a small preview of what is to come in the final race of the year.

Girls Results:

This week the girls team was led by Senior Emma DeRosa who has been knocking on the door of a new PR all season and finally busted through the door with a great time of 20:11! This is a :26 improvement and moves her to 18th on the HSM All-Time list and number 9 on the 12th grade list. Finishing 2nd for the ladies was Chesney Mathews, who obliterated her previous personal record by over 1:30 with a time of 20:30! Her time moves her to 21st on the HSM All-Time list and number 10 on the 10th grade list! Quinn Brown finished next for the team running her best time of the year with a race time of 20:55. Quinn and Emma will look to put a cap on fantastic careers at HSM on November 15th at the state meet. Quinn currently sits at 14th on the HSM All-Time list! 4th for the Eagles was Abbey Scalisi who also set a new PR of 22:02. Her time moves her into 38th on the HSM All-Time list and to 24th on the 9th grade list! 8th grader Ava Laroux followed Abbey with a new PR time of 22:41 which improves her best time by over :30 and places her in 23rd on the 8th grade list for HSM. Amie Cochran made a huge breakthrough this week accomplishing a goal that she has had in her sights since Oct 12th, 2019, she broke the 23 minute mark and set a new PR of 22:54! Such an awesome accomplishment for Amie who has worked so very hard to reach this goal! Her time also places her 25th on the 11th grade list. Claire Callis finished next with a great race time of 23:05, within :30 of the PR she set earlier in the year. Caroline Crooks, the lone 7th grader on the team, has been on the cusp of a breakthrough for weeks now and it all came together this week! She set her new PR at 23:40, an improvement of a 1:18 and moves her to 17th on the 7th grade list. Breanna Buller also set a new PR this week with her race time of 24:06 ending her season on a high note! Mia Parrish wrapped up the Lady Eagles with her awesome performance of 25:25! Great Job ladies and good luck at State!!!!

Boys Results:

On October 27, 2020 Noah Gad set a new PR at the district meet at Buhlow. He ended his Sophomore season with a time of 19:50, and earned himself a chance to travel with the team to the state meet as the team's #9 runner. 53 weeks later Noah Gad put together one of the most amazing races that HSM has ever seen by running an amazing time of 16:21! The method by which he was able to accomplish this time, as impressive as it is, is even more impressive in that the next finisher in the race was 48 seconds behind him. Leading the race from wire to wire Noah finds himself once again at #9 on a list of HSM runners, but this time it is on the HSM All-Time leaders list! Joining the likes of Doug Smith, Mark Landreneau, Dannon O'Kelly, Joffroi Holcombe, Mark Dotson, Ben Beard, Cyrus Cox, Joe Landreneau, and Steven Jeansonne in the top 10. Quite a list to join for sure and we can't wait to see how he wraps up his season on the 15th! Austin Siebeneicher was the next runner to finish this week coming very near to setting a new PR with his time of 17:09. As an 8th grader, he will look to break the 17:00 mark at the state meet and become only the 19th runner in HSM history to do so. Mikey DeRosa was 3rd for the Eagles this week with a new PR of 17:33! He moves to 38th on the HSM All-Time list with this weeks performance. Carter Byers was the next runner across the line with a great improvement on his PR of 17:39! These two 10th graders are improving every week and will look to make a huge impact for the team at state. Charles Beard continues to return to form this week with a renewed drive and focus just in time for state! His time of 17:46 is his best race time of the year and he is coming into the final stretch of the season with his eyes on the prize! Landry McGlothlin set an amazing new PR by not only breaking the 19:00 mark for the 1st time, but blazing all the way through the 18:00 mark as well! His time of 17:50 is good enough to place him tied for 49th on the HSM All-Time list, and a wonderful accomplishment following a Junior season that he had to sit out due to transferring schools. Aaron Cantrell was the next finisher for the team and he, like many of his teammates broke through a landmark that has been on his radar for quite a while. His time of 17:55 marks the first time he has broken the 18:00 mark and will put him on the perfect track for state. Matthew Hawthorne was neck and neck with Aaron at the line with a time of 17:56, also breaking the 18:00 mark for the first time. This improved his previous PR by :37!! Michael Gad also made a huge improvement over his previous PR by running 18:02, this improvement was 1:07 better than his run early in the season and 3:13 better than his PR last season! Jake Noda made the best run of his career this week as well by putting together a race time of 18:46, dropping his PR by :29 and setting the stage for a senior season that will be out of this world! Fynn Raborn dropped his PR by 2:20 this week by running a time of 19:33, an absolutely amazing feat by any measurement! David Shepherd also ran his best race of the season this week with a time of 19:40! Cayden Gorham wrapped up the race for the Eagles by running 21:05 but was running up in his normal spot near the front of the pack before his body said "enough!". He ran an awesome race given the fact that he was suffering from multiple illnesses, but he wanted to be there for the team no matter what and do his best. He will recover quickly and be back to his normal self in no time for sure! I am beyond proud of these runners this week Absolutely amazing effort everyone!

Remember that we will be competing at NSU on Monday, Nov 15th for the State Championships! Boys will run at 1:45 and girls at 3:15! If you can make it out please do, this team deserves every bit of support that the Eagle Nation can muster!!!!!!
